The problem

The homeowners were converting their basement into a secondary suite and were concerned about noise transfer to the main floor above.

They wanted the work to meet the sound separation expectations typical of a rental suite, not just standard residential drywall.

What we found

The existing floor assembly had no sound isolation beyond standard subfloor and ceiling drywall, which would transmit footfall and voice noise clearly to the upper floor.

The solution

We installed a resilient channel and double-layer drywall assembly on the basement ceiling, along with insulation in the joist cavity, to reduce both airborne and impact noise transfer, then finished and painted the space.

Result

The homeowners reported a noticeable reduction in noise transfer between floors, and the suite passed their rental readiness walkthrough.
